Looking for Information About the Process? We Can Help.
The Department of Veterans Affairs (formerly known as the Veterans Administration) exists to provide benefits to veterans who served our country. But let's face it; the VA is a huge government organization with limited resources. That's why having an advocate to help you through the process of applying for disability benefits can make a huge difference.
At The Rep for Vets™, we are Veterans Affairs advocates. We help veterans before, during and after the disability application process, helping them obtain the benefits they deserve. We advise them about their eligibility and make sure that they receive the maximum benefit possible. The process starts with a free initial consultation with a disability specialist from The Rep for Vets™. Once we determine that you are eligible for disability benefits, we start right away to minimize your waiting time.
Summary of the VA Benefits Application Process
Here is an overview of the VA disability benefits application process:
- Complete VA Form 21-526
- Complete additional forms requested by the VA, including releases for medical records
- Assemble the required documentation, including discharge or separation papers, marriage certifications, birth certificates, and all medical records, including those from nonmilitary providers
- Receive a medical exam (this does not happen in every case)
- Notify the VA of your intention to appeal if your initial application is denied or you receive a smaller award than you believe your disability warrants
- Gather additional medical or other evidence that supports your assertion that the first determination was wrong
- Appear at a Board of Veterans Affairs (BVA) hearing in support of your appeal
This is a quick summary of the process. There are actually many small but critical details that can make a big difference in your outcome. At The Rep for Vets™, we make sure that all details are handled correctly. For example, if you move and do not notify your local field office of your new address, you will almost certainly experience a delay. Similarly, if your documentation is incomplete or is not the right kind, your initial application or your appeal may be denied. Our advocates handle matters like these to strengthen your case.
