Camp Lejeune-trained Marines have played an outsize role in every major war since, as well as humanitarian and peacekeeping missions around the world. But Camp Lejeune has a dark chapter in its history that has only recently come to light. What Happened at Camp Lejeune? Between the 1950s...

A house with a single light on at night demonstrating sleep apnea concept

Sleep apnea is one of the most common disabilities affecting veterans. It's also one of the most misunderstood. Some see it as a nuisance, others as a life-threatening condition. A soon-to-retire service member described his sleep apnea this way: "I was diagnosed with sleep apnea about 2 years ago and I have to say that I love my CPAP, it is awesome to embrace the feeling of your skull being crushed while you attempt to sleep for four hours… if I’m lucky!" Even with the CPAP machine delivering some relief, this individual is not going to be anywhere near 100% at work the...

5 Ways Scammers Target Veterans

The men and women who served our country with honor and distinction deserve a lot of things. Praise. Respect. Honor. Compassion for those who are dealing with disabilities connected to service. Here's what they don't deserve: attempts to take advantage of their military background to defraud them of their hard-earned benefits. But every day, scammers target veterans in attempts to poach their pensions, saddle them with bad financial products, and even steal their identities. A 2021 AARP study found that veterans are 40% more likely to lose money to scammers. That's double the percentage of non-veterans who fall prey to scammers. That...

Agent Orange Exposure: A Must Read for Every Vietnam-Era Veteran

Stethoscope lies on the uniform of a Vietnam-era soldier.

Our full understanding of the health impacts of Agent Orange has expanded over the years. So, too, has the VA's official position on which diseases are caused by Agent Orange, and who is eligible for disability benefits. Yet 50 years since the end of the Vietnam War, some veterans are still waiting to get benefits for Agent Orange exposure. In 2021, three new conditions -- bladder cancer, hypothyroidism, and Parkinsonism -- were added to the Agent Orange presumptive benefits list. That increased the disability payments of thousands of Vietnam-era veterans. But hypertension and dementia, which researchers say are connected to Agent...

Why We’re Observing Two Minutes of Silence This Veterans Day

Remembrance quilt, Armistice Day

The tradition of observing two minutes of silence on Veterans Day has lapsed in recent years. We think it must be kept alive, not only to honor the fallen of the world wars, but for all wars. Perhaps you are old enough to remember a time when the tradition was more widely observed than it is now. Harry Binder, founder of The Rep Vets, a national veterans disability advocacy firm, remembers a time when “the whole country stopped at 11a.m." The reason? At the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month of 1918, Allied powers signed a ceasefire agreement...
